5 Tips for Hiring a Website Developer

Clients regularly ask us to advise them with respect to their plans to develop a new website or refresh an older one.  Here are 5 “big picture” things to keep in mind when hiring a website developer:

 

    • Get a written agreement with specific deliverables/deadlines [and keep a complete, signed copy].

    • Do NOT turn-over exclusive control of your existing or new domain/website.

    • Check references.

    • Insist on installment payments based on verifiable deliverables.

    • If your project is complicated/expensive, it is worth the extra cost to hire an experienced attorney to assist you.

 

Of course, you should always have your attorney review the draft agreement before execution, even if you have agreement with the developer on the general terms and conditions.  Many disputes can be avoided if potential issues are addressed upfront in the agreement.  Good luck with your new website(s).
