Why I Attend Software Development Conferences

As I prepare for Microconf Americas 2025 in a couple of weeks, I took some time to think about why I enjoy attending software conferences. For me, there’s something uniquely energizing about being in a room full of software company owners and entrepreneursThese events bring together the owners of software companies, providing a unique opportunity to learn from people who are actively building and growing their businesses. While it’s true that I do meet some clients at these conferences, that’s not my primary motivation. Instead, I see these gatherings as a chance to gain insight into the challenges and opportunities that software entrepreneurs face. Their experiences shape how I approach my work, ensuring that I can offer informed and relevant advice.

In my software law practice, I help companies protect their intellectual property, navigate licensing issues, and address disputes related to infringement and contractual conflicts. Understanding the real-world concerns of software company owners helps me anticipate the legal hurdles they may encounter. Conferences give me direct access to candid discussions about the strategies that work, the mistakes that have been made, and the evolving landscape of software business models. This knowledge allows me to better serve my clients, offering legal strategies that align with the realities of the industry.

Beyond the professional benefits, there’s also a personal draw for me. Before moving into my current role, I was a software engineer, and while I love the work I do now, I do miss the development side of things. Conferences put me back in that world–surrounded by people who live and breathe software, discussing the latest trends, innovations, and challenges in the industry. They provide a wonderful bridge between my past and present, allowing me to stay connected with the technical discussions that first drew me to the field while applying my legal expertise to help these businesses thrive. It’s a refreshing way to stay connected to my roots while applying my legal expertise in ways that are directly useful to the people building the future of software.
